MEET THE TEAM | Hayden Powell, Design placement student

Hayden is currently on a sandwich placement with Cottam working in design and product development. He returns to Northumbria University to finish his final year on his Design for Industry course. Lets find out a little bit more about Hayden…

Give a brief overview of your degree and how your studies will support your role at Cottam

My degree has taught me all areas of industrial design giving me a much better understanding of what I could see in my future. Covering a range of areas from sketching to model making and a range of service design I knew nothing about prior. The broadness of the course will help me tackle any project I am set to the best of my abilities, hopefully I can use this knowledge to impress the team.

Why did you choose to do a placement with Cottam?

When I heard about the placement, “They make brushes…” this made me very curious to see and learn about how Cottam doesn’t just design simple brushes, especially with 166 years in the industry. Plus being a small team I knew I could get a lot of experience and advice from some very knowledgeable people who can help me learn and understand the design world better.

What would you like to do after you graduate?

Honestly, I’m still trying to work that out… I’d like to jump straight into an area of design that would allow me to work hands on as I prefer to make what I’m designing and see it come to life, rather than just a sketch. A lot of my time at home is spent making and fixing things so it is definitely an area I would be interested in exploring.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love the outdoors and try to be out whenever I can, luckily, I have dogs to ensure I’m out as much as possible. Over recent years I’ve taken up mountain biking, getting out as much as possible when I have time away from jobs at home. However recently the majority of my time is taken up with restoring a Land Rover Series 2A with my dad.

What is your favourite TV show?

Supernatural, I find the folk lore/ myths and legends a very interesting genre, plus it has great music!

What is the weirdest thing you’ve eaten?

I’m not very adventurous with food so it would have to be fried Whitebait
