MEET THE TEAM | Aaron Mills & Anna Tripcony, T-Level Students

Aaron and Anna are T Level students from Sunderland college who joined Cottam back in February for one day per week as part of their Business course. Over the course of the year they will spend time in all areas of the business from sales and marketing to logistics and finance to get a feel for how a business operates in the real world. For their meet the team, Aaron and Anna interviewed each other so lets find out a little bit more about them…

Up first is Aaron…

Anna: Give a brief overview our course and how this placement at Cottam will support your studies.

Aaron: My course is split up into 7 units (3 for core paper 1 and 4 for core paper 2). These units are; Business behaviours, Business Context and People, (This is core paper 1 content), Finance, Policies and Procedures, Project and Change Management and Quality and Compliance. My placement here at Cottam will help put the principles I learn into practice in the working world.

Anna: When choosing a placement, what stood out about Cottam?

Aaron: The Cottam team were all very friendly when we had our visit with the college and it seemed to have a nice workplace environment and structure. They also offered to really get us involved with the work and promise to allow us to experience all of the departments in correlation to our college course.

Anna: What would be your dream job in the future?

Aaron: I would really like to work for a football team or a luxury car company like Porsche

Anna: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Aaron: In my spare time, I enjoy swimming. I am a competitive swimmer and swim Monday to Friday. I also volunteer as a teacher at my club which is good fun, but a handful!!!

Anna: What’s something you have always wanted to do but never have?

Aaron: I have always wanted to watch an arsenal game at the Emirates. I have always followed Arsenal as my dad is from North London, however we have never been able to get tickets. I am hopeful we will sometime soon!

Anna: If you won a million pounds what would you buy?

Aaron: If I won a million pounds, I would get a nice house, with a swimming pool. Then I wouldn’t need to leave the comfort of my own home to go for a swim!

Now lets find out a little bit about Anna…

Aaron: How would you describe our course and how this placement at Cottam will support your studies.

Anna: As Aaron said, the course is made up of 7 units in the first year, which touches on many aspects of business. Next year we begin to specialise in business support.

Alongside my studies in college we are also required to complete 315 hours of work placement, which I will achieve whilst here at Cottam.

Aaron: When choosing a placement, what stood out about Cottam?

Anna: Whilst we were presented with many great opportunities, Cottam stood out for numerous reasons.

Cottam’s values and history stood out to me. During the visit with college to Cottam HQ it was clear that the business still felt like a family due to its smaller workforce. The values of the business also resonated with me which helped me decide on Cottam for my placement.

In the initial discussions with Sue she made me feel confident that the business would focus on us. It reassured me that I would get to experience multiple areas of the business which is great for helping me to determine what I do in the future.

Aaron: What would be your dream job in the future?

Anna: I don’t really have a dream job, more of a dream company or situation. My main aim with a job in the future is to do something which I enjoy whilst earning enough money to support a family as I see family as a huge part of my future plans.

Ideally, I think I would enjoy working in a football club, like Aaron. However maybe not Sunderland because the club seems to be falling apart internally, as well as on the pitch (I am a Sunderland fan)!

Aaron: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Anna: In my spare time I enjoy going to buskers nights with my friends and boyfriend. Through buskers nights, which I first started going to, to support my friend, I have met so many new people. The places we have visited also have given me insight into business in music, which reminds me that business really is everywhere.

When I’m not at a buskers night, I tend to be at home with my family or at the match. I only started going to Sunderland matches regularly in 2022 however since then have witnessed many ups and downs at the Stadium of Light. The match always reminds me of Cottam as I sit in front of the advertising boards in the West stand.

Aaron: What’s something you have always wanted to do but never have?

Anna: Since becoming more involved in local music I have started to wish that I could sing as well as the people I am surrounded by. I really want to do singing lessons however have never managed to convince myself to do them because I’m worried about embarrassing myself in them.

Other than that I have always wanted to be a princess (or a princess by day and a tooth fairy by night if we are going off my reception graduation) but growing up I have realised that’s not the most attainable wish!

Aaron: If you won a million pounds what would you buy?

Anna: I would look into buying a house in the Lakes as I love my Uncle’s house on Skiddaw. If there was leftover money, I would put this into an account to gather interest for future holidays.
