MEET THE TEAM | Jamie Keyworth, Design placement student

Jamie is currently on placement with Cottam working in design and product development. He graduated this year with a degree in Design for Industry from Northumbria University.

Give a brief overview of your degree and how your studies are helping your role with Cottam

During my degree, I learned a lot about how to design products to meet the needs of consumers, businesses and the wider society.

I developed skills in design research, developing product life cycles and generating new concepts, which have all been invaluable in my role at Cottam. I’ve also had the opportunity to collaborate with our Head of Product, Nick Palfreyman, on an ongoing project in grounds maintenance.

Why did you choose to do a placement with Cottam?

Cottam is a small, close-knit team and a forward thinking company. When I found out it had been established for over 165 years, I knew I wanted to do a placement in a company where I could really get stuck in and learn from the experienced colleagues in the business. I thought “I’d really love to know how they’ve been so successful and use my skills to be a part of that success.”

What do you like to do outside of work / studying?

I enjoy sports and keeping fit. I play weekly five-a-side and regularly lift weights, and I’ve just started running again.

I also like visiting new places – a recent favourite was when I visited London, it has a great atmosphere!

What are your ambitions now you’ve graduated? How do you think the placement will help you?

Now that I’ve graduated, I’m really excited to begin my career in design. I’m really enjoying working with Nick and the team, and collaborating on projects. The placement at Cottam has helped me gain invaluable industry experience, and I’ve learned more about how companies operate.

If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be?

A whole lot of knowledge! I really enjoyed studying at university, and I like that I am able to answer questions and support my colleagues with my product design skills.

What’s something you’re planning on doing in the next year that you’ve never done before?

I’ve recently bought a new pair of running shoes, and it’s my goal to enter a half marathon this year. I really enjoy running, it’s so helpful for my physical and mental health, and complements my weight training. If I enjoy the half marathon, I’d love to take part in the Great North Run next year.
