Improving Weir Cleaning Through Customer-Led :
Introducing Our Six-Brush System
At Cottam Brush, we believe some of the best product developments come from working closely with our customers. Understanding the challenges they face, listening to their feedback and using that knowledge to continually improve our solutions is an important part of what we do.
Our latest development to our Weir Brush Cleaning System is a great example of this approach.
Following feedback and insights gained from working with customers in the water treatment industry, we’ve further developed our existing system, introducing two additional brush arms to create a more comprehensive six-brush cleaning solution.

Why Effective Weir and Launder Cleaning Matters
In wastewater treatment facilities, weirs and effluent launders play an important role in managing the flow of water through settlement tanks. During the settlement process, suspended solids separate from the water and settle at the bottom of the tank, allowing the cleaner liquid to pass over the weir and continue through the treatment process. Keeping these areas clean is an important part of maintaining efficient operations.
Over time, algae, biological growth and other deposits can accumulate on weir plates and within launder channels, creating additional maintenance requirements for operators.
Our Weir Brush Cleaning System was originally developed to help address these challenges, providing an effective way to keep weir surfaces clean while reducing the need for ongoing manual intervention. However, through our continued work with customers, we identified an opportunity to take this solution one step further.
Introducing Our New Six-Brush System
One of the key insights we’ve gained from working with water treatment operators is the importance of cleaning not only the existing weir surfaces but also the weir plates mounted on the tank walls. These areas can be susceptible to the accumulation of algae and biological deposits, making them another important consideration in the overall cleaning and maintenance process.
With this in mind, our technical team has developed our existing four-brush system into a six-brush configuration, introducing an additional brush arm with two brushes specifically designed to clean the wall-mounted weir plates.
This latest development extends the cleaning coverage of the system, helping operators maintain these additional surfaces and reduce the need for manual cleaning. It’s a relatively simple development, but one that demonstrates the value of understanding how our products perform in real working environments.
Designed with Maintenance in Mind
Alongside effective cleaning, ease of maintenance has always been an important consideration in the development of our weir and launder cleaning solutions. Our systems incorporate spring-loaded, self-adjusting brushes and quick-release designs, helping to simplify brush replacement and reduce operational downtime.
We’ve also worked with customers to develop bespoke configurations where standard solutions aren’t suitable.
One example is our work with Bridges Electrical Engineers Ltd, where we developed a bespoke uplift system that allows operators to lift the brush assembly out of the weir for cleaning and maintenance, without physically entering the tank.
The project demonstrated how a relatively simple design adaptation could make a significant difference to the practical operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility.
Innovation Through Partnership
For us, this latest development represents more than simply adding two brushes to an existing product. It demonstrates the value of building long-term relationships with our customers and taking the time to understand the challenges they face.
By combining our experience in industrial brush design and manufacture with the operational knowledge of those working in the water treatment industry, we’re able to continually develop practical solutions that respond to genuine requirements.
Our new six-brush weir and launder cleaning system is another example of our commitment to partnership, innovation and quality.
