COTTAM EEL PASSES
Aid migration and protect critically endangered European Eels
Cottam’s eel passes, designed in partnership with the Environment Agency, aid migration of endangered eels over man-made obstacles and encourage repopulation.

Our Eel Passes
Available as rigid or flexible boards, our eel passes can be adapted to suit various spatial and environmental conditions. Our rigid boards are manufactured from Polypropylene while our flexible boards are made using SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) for full malleability. Cottam boards are filled with tufts of polyester, a hardwearing, non-absorbent material which is flexible enough to accommodate migrating eels.
Rigid

-
Board: Rigid polypropylene
-
Bristles: Black polyester, 0.8mm diameter, 60mm long
-
Tufts: 4mm diameter from 20mm to 30mm spacings, for elvers and juvenile eels
Flexible

-
Board: Flexible polypropylene
-
Bristles: Black polyester, 0.8mm diameter, 60mm long
-
Tufts: 4mm diameter from 20mm to 30mm spacings, for elvers and juvenile eels
The problem
European Eels are now listed as Critically Endangered…
…and barriers like those shown above (weirs, sluices, dams) are blocking eel migration
Since the 1980s, there has been a 90% decline in the number of European Eels. As a result of this decline, there is currently a
European strategy and associated legislation to restore the population. Businesses working in the waterways industries within the
UK may need to follow The Eels (England & Wales) Regulations 2009, part of which requires an eel pass be built to allow the free
passage of eels over structures which may impede them.
We contacted Cottam to design a solution which would provide the same
excellent level of performance while adapting to changing environmental and
spatial conditions. They developed a solution which is not only effective but can
be customised to any installation.
