CASE STUDY: Pipeline Cleaning Brush – TD Williamson
Enhancing Pipeline Maintenance: Cottam’s Innovative Brush Solution for TD Williamson
At Cottam, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our goal is to not just meet our customers expectations but to surpass them with innovative solutions. When TD Williamson, a global leader in pipeline services, reached out to us about replacing their pipeline inspection gauge brushes, we saw an opportunity to do more than just supply a direct replacement. We wanted to understand their challenges fully and deliver a solution that would address the root causes of their problems, not just the symptoms.
The Challenge
TD Williamson was facing a recurring issue with their existing brushes, which were made using the clip method. These brushes were snapping during use, leading to pipeline cleaning inefficiencies. While they initially contacted us for an updated quote on these brushes, we recognised that a simple price refresh wouldn’t solve the real problem. TD Williamson needed a more durable, reliable brush that could handle the rigors of pipeline maintenance, preparing the pipeline as best as possible ready for inspections.
The Solution
Instead of proceeding with a like-for-like quote, we took a consultative approach. We initiated a discussion with TD Williamson to truly understand their pain points. This conversation highlighted the limitations of their current brush design, so our team set to work on developing an improved solution. Using insights from these discussions, our design team engineered a new brush with enhanced durability and performance. We chose more robust materials and opted for a punch-fill manufacturing process, known for its reliability in tough environments. The redesigned brush featured a CNC-reuttered black HDPE core that flexed into a sturdy stainless-steel plate, housing punch-filled carbon steel wire tufts that could withstand the harsh conditions of pipeline use.
Our Process
Our first step was to gain a deep understanding of TD Williamson’s operational challenges. Through collaborative discussions, we gathered valuable feedback that guided the design phase. Based on their input, we meticulously developed a brush that addressed the weaknesses of their existing tools. The CNC reuttering allowed for precise alignment of the core, and the combination of materials provided both flexibility and strength. Once the design was finalised, TD Williamson rigorously tested the new brushes in a live environment to confirm they met—and exceeded—the necessary performance standards.
The Outcome
The results were exceptional. The new brushes delivered superior performance, increasing cleaning efficiency so the pipeline was in the best condition ready to be inspected. The robust construction ensured the brush remained intact. TD Williamson was not only impressed with the improved durability but also noted enhanced pitting and debris removal in their pipelines, which will result in more effective inspections. The feedback from TD Williamson was overwhelmingly positive. The brushes held up under tough conditions, and the project manager expressed high satisfaction with their performance.
This case study underscores the value of taking the time to understand a customer’s unique challenges and designing solutions that go beyond the standard. At Cottam, we believe that innovation is more than just improving on the past—it’s about listening to our customers, identifying pain points, and delivering solutions that make a real difference. By developing a brush that solved TD Williamson’s issues, we didn’t just meet their expectations; we helped enhance their overall operational efficiency.
