Getting to know..... Alan Crook
What do you do at Cottam?
Whilst my title is Manufacturing Director I tend to deal with things that impact on manufacturing and supply. Apart from that, I try to keep out of people's hair and let them do their jobs - which is harder than it seems!
What are you most proud of?
The progress of our staff and how they have dealt with the ever changing demands of our business. We might not get everything right, but I know that the team tries really hard. They are conscientious enough to be upset when things don't go as planned, and determined enough to improve going forward.
Who or what inspires you?
I'm a football fan and my footballing hero was Brian Clough. He did things his way and no other manager (Alex Ferguson included) could have achieved what Cloughie did. The reason he was so exceptional is that he took a bunch of individually average footballers and moulded them into a collective unit that won major honours. He then proved it wasn't a fluke by doing it for a second time. Cloughie proved that you don't necessarily need great individuals to make a great team.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I love to sit in the sun with a beer on holiday and try to do that a couple of times a year. Other than that I keep up to date with what's going on in the world of sport and every other week you'll find me at the temple of football which is of course the Stadium of Light!
I also have a part time job which you'll see from my photograph!
What is your favourite Cottam product – and why?
I'm not sure that I could say what my 'favourite' product is, but I always like telling visitors the story of the Cow Brush we sell to agricultural suppliers. Apparently an agitated cow produces less milk and when the cow scratches itself on the brushes, which are fixed around the milking pen, the yield of milk increases. Proof that a brush isn't always 'just a brush'.
